New Hembrug
The Hembrug area – now known as New Hembrug – is one of the most important locations of industrial heritage in the Netherlands. The central information point of the HollandRoute will be established here. The surface area is 45 hectares and is a former industrial and military domain. Many buildings from the period 1895-1970 have been preserved on this enormous terrain. The industrial development of the 20th century is very visible here. Redevelopment of the area is in process.
Heart Defence line Amsterdam
The complex lies in the heart of the Defence line of Amsterdam, a so-called "redoubt of permanent defensive construction" around the capital. It was built between 1880 and 1920 by the former Department of War. Within the Defence line of Amsterdam, supply with weapons and ammunition was of great importance. Therefore, the Artillery-Devices (AD) was transferred from Delft to the Hembrug area at the end of the 19th century.
Current users
Several organisations are located on the property. Only the Hembrug museum is open to visitors. Other users are: Glass artists Vrij Glas, Street theatre company Aardlek, Foundation Mobile Artillery, Taets Art Gallery, Festival SmaakExplosies (TasteExplosions). In 2012 the opening of the ERIH HollandCentre is expected.
