The HollandRoute: Landscape, Heritage, Tourism

The HollandRoute brings you to heritage locations of trade, industry, technology, water management, infrastructure, social history and landscape, in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The HollandRoute is part of the European network "European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH)".

A signed main route of the HollandRoute heritage network connects many fascinating heritage attractions that are all described on this website and in the HollandRoute guide.

The HollandRoute has five European ERIH-Anchor points. Those are internationally prominent locations, such as Heineken Experience, the Zaanse Schans and Museum pumping station De Cruquius.

The 48 Route Points of the HollandRoute are also important and very varied attractions: among others historic mills, pumping stations, trade exchanges, factories, transport museums, forts and historic museums, up to and including the flower auction of Aalsmeer.

The 47 Rest Points of the HollandRoute are exciting places to eat, drink and sleep, all situated in historic buildings, up to a restaurant on an old railway bridge.

Most Anchor points, Route Points and Rest Points are located at the main route or at one of the several theme routes for cycling and walking.

Important spearheads of the HollandRoute are:

  • An active network of 100 heritage locations (Anchor points, Route Points and Rest Points)
  • A signed main route of 140 kilometres long
  • Over 50 theme routes for cycling and walking
  • Printed media, such as the HollandRoute Guide
  • An increasing network of Information Points

The HollandRoute will be expanded in the coming period. For instance, a second main route will be made that will make all aspects of the Dutch polder landscape accessible. The polder land route will go from the UNESCO World heritage Beemster, via Waterland, the Zaan region, Amsterdam, Aalsmeer, Haarlemmermeer, to the provinces of South Holland and Utrecht.
